Learning Center / Academic Assistance

PURPOSE of the LEARNING CENTER:
  • Teach strategies for learning (access strategies);
  • Extend the learning in the general education classroom (extension);
  • Provide targeted intervention; and monitor progress of students. 

PROGRAM COMPONENTS

Remedial Education - To re-teach basic skills and augment in-class instruction  in small group or individualized instruction.

Support with Course Work - To support students with assignments, projects and class work by providing additional time for work completion and further instruction.

Study Skills - To teach study skills including organization, time-management, exam preparation, and effective listening, reading comprehension, note taking and writing skills.

Test preparation - additional help with study guides, visual aids, study schedules, group tutoring, practice sessions, identifying areas of weakness and targeted instruction .

PROGRAM AIMS

  • To provide remedial learning opportunities, learning skills training and academic support to students identified as requiring learning assistance using a range of teaching methods and curriculum approaches.
  • To identify students requiring remedial learning assistance through a process of screening and assessment.​
  • To ensure appropriate consultation and documentation in the development and delivery of programs for students with learning and related challenges.
