Advanced Studies

We are proud to offer both Advanced Placement courses as well as Dual Enrollment.

Advanced Placement

The Advanced Placement Program, commonly known as Advanced Placement, or AP, is a United States and Canada-based program that offers high school students the opportunity to receive university credit for their work during high school. A student must pass the exam to earn the college credit.  The score achieved on the AP exam does not affect the grade earned in the class.  AP classes are taught by Notre Dame teachers at Notre Dame. The student pays the fee to take the AP exam in May.

Dual Enrollment

Students enrolled in dual credit classes have the opportunity to earn "dual credit" (high school and college credits) for the advanced level courses. These college level courses are taught at the high school by Notre Dame teachers approved by the college and are considered to be part of a GCC or Alfred State degree or certificate program. Students pay tuition to earn the college credit.  The credit earned may or may not transfer to other colleges.

Benefits for the Student:
  • The student can earn both high school and college credit at the same time.
  • The courses and credits will be on the student’s GCC or Alfred State transcript and will transfer to many other colleges.
  • Obtaining Dual Credit reduces the number of courses needed for a college degree after high school graduation.
  • Tuition fees are lower.
  • Courses are challenging, with college-level content and expectations.
  • Students are introduced to the college experience while still at home and with their friends, increasing motivation to attend college after high school.
  • Conducive Learning Environment – The students who choose to be in these rigorous classes want to be there and want to learn.  These classes may be more stimulating.
  • Your “Major” – Students could potentially earn enough credits to enter college as a sophomore and begin to work on their major that much sooner.
  • Statistics prove that taking rigorous classes leads to future college success!
