A popular place for prayer, the rosary and contemplation among Batavia, and Genesee area Catholics is the grotto to Our Lady of Lourdes in a sheltered place on the northwest part of the Notre Dame campus.
It is a replica of the shrine to Our Lady on the campus of Notre Dame University in South Bend, Ind. It was conceived and built in large part by Robert E. Radley, a retired contractor and at the time a member of the school’s Board of Trustees.
The cornerstone was laid in May, 1997. The completed grotto was dedicated May 13, 1998. It would have been sooner but architect/contractor Radley was sidelined with a heart attack. The statue of the blessed Mother was given in memory of Elizabeth F. Brown, a retired teacher and mother of three ND graduates.
The Grotto to Our Lady of Lourdes is a serene place where people go to find peace and answers to their prayers. Many have chosen to honor or memorialize loved ones with a brick that is inscribed and placed in front of the Grotto. A grotto brick can mark a milestone birthday or anniversary, or honor an individual or family that is important in your life. For more information on how to purchase a brick, call the Notre Dame Development Office at (585) 343-2798.
