Courses // Advanced Placement (College)

Students who wish to take the Advanced Placement exam MUST contact the instructor and guidance office at the beginning of the school year.

SCIENCE

AP BIOLOGY (FULL YEAR – 1 CREDIT)

This course is specifically geared for students intending to major in the sciences in college. The course is equivalent to a 2-semester college freshman biology course, and is designed to prepare students for the AP Biology examination in June. There are 12 specific laboratory experiments that illustrate various concepts covered, and are testable on the AP Biology exam. Topics covered include the chemistry of life, cells, cellular energetics, heredity, molecular genetics, evolutionary biology, diversity of organisms, structure and function of plants and animals, and ecology.

A strong chemistry background is required. High levels of commitment, motivation, maturity, and self-discipline are essential for success in a course of this caliber.

Students wishing to take the AP Biology course are required to have an 85 average in the sciences, recommendation from two teachers, (at least one must be a science teacher), and approval of the instructor.

Enrollment in this course REQUIRES the student to take the Advanced Placement Exam in May.

AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE (FULL YEAR – 1 CREDIT)

Advanced Placement Environmental Science is a college level course designed to prepare students for the AP exam in mid-May. All advanced placement courses are very demanding in the amount of time required for extensive reading, writing, - and for this course – field trips for research. APES, is an appropriate choice for students who plan to major in science in college. Successful results on the exam would count as an elective in the major field. The course is also an appropriate choice for student not majoring in science as it may be allowed as credit toward a required science course as part of a liberal arts program.

MATH

ALGEBRA 3 & TRIGONOMETRY (FULL YEAR – 1 CREDIT)

MAT 136 (GCC – 3 CREDITS)

Topics include absolute value equations and inequalities; solving systems of linear equations using determinants; review of rational exponents, radical expressions and complex numbers; quadratic equations and inequalities; solving equations reducible to quadratic form; quadratic, exponential and logarithmic functions and applications; graphs of functions; algebra of functions; inverse functions; conic sections; nonlinear systems of equations and inequalities; right triangle trigonometry; trigonometric functions and the unit circle.

Students interested in earning college credit for MAT 136 must register with and remit payment to Genesee Community College directly.

PRE-CALCULUS (HALF YEAR - 1 CREDIT)

Possible 4 COLLEGE CREDITS - GCC

This course provides a thorough background in pre-calculus topics. This will include the study of polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions and their inverses, along with polar coordinates, and conic sections. Emphasis is on algebraic manipulation and graphing (including the use of the graphing calculator).

PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Course III OR Math 11

Students wishing to earn college credit for Pre-Calculus must register with and remit payment to Genesee Community College directly.

CALCULUS I (HALF YEAR - 1 CREDIT)

4 COLLEGE CREDITS - GCC

This course will continue some topics from pre-calculus. Calculus topics such as: limits, derivatives, applications of derivatives, integrals, and applications of integrals will also be studied. Graphing calculators will be used throughout the course.

PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Pre-Calculus

Student interesting in earning college credit for Calculus 1 must register with and remit payment to Genesee Community College directly.

CALCULUS II (FULL YEAR - 1 CREDIT)

4 COLLEGE CREDITS - GCC

This course continues the Calculus I study of limits, derivatives and integration to include applications of integration and integration techniques. Inverse function and further study of conic sections are included. Graphing calculators will be used throughout the course.

PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Calculus I

Students interested in earning college credit for Calculus II must register with and remit payment to Genesee Community College directly.

Enrollment in this course REQUIRES the student to take the Advanced Placement exam in May. Students are required to pay the fee the first month of the school year.

HISTORY

AP – US HISTORY/HISTORY 203/204 (FULL YEAR – 1 CREDIT)

The Advanced Placement program and exam in U.S. History is intended for qualified students who wish to complete studies in high school that are equivalent to college introductory courses in U.S. History.

This program is designed to provide students with analytical and factual knowledge necessary to deal critically with problems and materials in U.S. History.

Enrollment in this course can be taken for either college credit or AP credit.

Taking this course for AP credit REQUIRES the student to pay for and take the Advanced Placement exam in June.

Students taking this course for college credit are eligible to earn 6 credits from Genesee Community College and they must register with and remit payment to the college directly.

PSYCHOLOGY

PSY 101 INTRO PSYCHOLOGY (HALF YEAR– 1/2 CREDIT)

3 COLLEGE CREDITS - GCCv

This course is an introduction to the scientific study of human and animal behavior. Topics covered in the course include basic methodology, motivation, learning, cognitive processes, and other significant areas of interest.

SOCIOLOGY

SOC 101 INTRO SOCIOLOGY (HALF YEAR – 1/2 CREDIT)

3 COLLEGE CREDITS – GCC

This course is a study of the major factors affecting the structure and functioning of group life. Social patterns such as cultural values, deviance, class structure and social change will be explored. Upon completion, each student will understand the methods and perspectives sociologists employ, as well as the ways group forces influence the individual in society.

Students interested in earning college credits for Psychology & Sociology must register with and remit payment to Genesee Community College directly. Students not wishing college credit may also take these courses with no cost.

ENGLISH

ENGLISH 101 (HALF YEAR – 1/2 CREDIT)

3 COLLEGE CREDITS – GCC

Presents an overview of the basic rhetorical principles that apply to six aims of discourse, with particular focus on informative and persuasive discourse. Students write six to eight compositions and several examinations, and learn and apply appropriate research and documentation skills.  A variety of novels and other works of literature will be examined.  Public speaking and presentation skills are also implemented.  Students will earn 3 credits through GCC upon successful completion of the course.  Payment and registration must be made through GCC.

ENGLISH 105 (HALF YEAR – 1/2 CREDIT)

3 COLLEGE CREDITS – GCC

Continues study of rhetorical principles introduced in ENG101 by focusing on expressive, informative and persuasive writing strategies. Emphasizes critical thinking skills by focusing on literature, film, visual arts, and performing arts in some combination. Students write six to eight compositions which may branch into multimedia.  Students will earn 3 credits through GCC upon successful completion of the course.  Payment and registration must be made through GCC.  Prerequisite: ENG101
