Campus Ministry

Its primary function is the continual development of faith among students, staff, faculty, and parents. It devotes itself to promoting spiritual, liturgical, and missionary welfare. Various activities include school liturgies, yearly retreats for each class, pastoral counseling, and Christian service programs.

PURPOSE:

The continual development of the faith community among students, faculty, staff and parents

LITURGIES:

All-school masses are held monthly and for special occasions and events such as homecoming, freshmen welcome and senior farewell. In addition, an annual Family Mass is celebrated on a Sunday evening prior to Thanksgiving. Masses are often held in the chapel for small groups, particularly sports teams prior to a game.

RETREATS:

Class retreats are held yearly:

  • 9th grade- part of the Camp Hough freshmen experience during the first week of school in September
  • 10th grade-October of each year
  • 11th grade-varies
  • 12th grade-overnight at Harvest House in May of each year
  • Staff retreat is held annually on the Feast of All Saints, November 1st

PRAYER:

Students are responsible for:

  • Morning prayer every day over the p.a. system
  • Leading prayer in the classroom and at school events
  • Prayer services throughout the year
  • Advent wreath lighting and prayer ceremonies each Tuesday in Advent

MINISTRIES:

Many opportunities are available for both students and staff to serve one another:

  • Liturgies-altar servers, lectors, gift bearers and music ministers (chorus, band and handbell choir) - Training is provided for confirmed Roman Catholic students or staff
  • Members who wish to become Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
  • Grotto keepers-students who care for the Grotto to Our Lady of Lourdes

CHRISTIAN SERVICE:

Notre Dame’s mission statement challenges us to prepare young people “to serve in an ever-changing world.” We believe that service to one’s community is an integral part of Christian life and therefore, our program is a graduation requirement. Each student is obligated to complete the following:

  • 9th grade: 10 hours of service (at least 5 of the hours must be with a church or church based organization; the remainder may be chosen from the preapproved list; other ideas require preapproval)
  • 10th grade: 12 hours from the preapproved list or with approval
  • 11th grade: 15 hours from the preapproved list or with approval
  • 12th grade: 20 hours from the preapproved list or with approval

All hours must be properly documented and submitted to the Campus Ministry office. Each student will be required to write a reflection paper each year under the direction of the Theology department.
