MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Notre Dame High School Library Media Center is to support the school’s curriculum by providing teachers and students with resources which will enhance classroom lessons while teaching students how to effectively and responsibly locate, evaluate and use information.  The library media center will also promote reading and provide for the personal information needs of students.  These actions will lead to the students’ personal growth, while they learn to understand and contribute to their community.

HOURS / SCHEDULE

The library will be open from 8:00 - 3:30 on days when school is in session.  It will be closed for a period (7th) for the librarian's lunch break (unless a scheduled class needs to use the library that period).

The library media center operates on a flexible schedule.  This allows various groups (study hall students, individuals or small groups from classes as well as whole classes) to use the library as needed.

RESOURCES AND SERVICES

Print Collection
Notre Dame High School Library Media Center has over 7,000 volumes, subscribes to about twenty print periodicals, and receives three print newspapers.  Notre Dame is a member of the Genesee Valley BOCES School Library System.  Materials from other school libraries in the Genesee Valley School Library System are easily available through interlibrary loan.  Materials from libraries within the Rochester Regional Library Council, which is comprised of public, school, academic and special libraries are also available.

Technology / Electronic Collection

The library has networked computers (PCs) available for student and faculty use.  In addition to Office programs, Microsoft Publisher and internet access, students and faculty can also use online databases which Notre Dame subscribes to (see the library’s web site, http://www.ndhsbatavia.com/library, for details) for help with their research.  Ebooks are also available through the library's web site.  The library media center also maintains a web site with links to helpful web sites and information that will help students with their research projects.

Printing and Copying
Printing and copying services are available to all students, faulty and staff free of charge.

Audio-Visual and Computer Equipment
Audio-visual and computer equipment  may be checked-out of the library by members of the faculty.

Notre Dame is a member of the BOCES Media Library.  Resources from this resource include DVDs, video databases, and digital audiobook loans.  Faculty members may borrow any materials and students may borrow audiobooks only.  The Media Library is also able to record educational programming for teachers (network, cable and satellite broadcasts).  Notre Dame High School Library keeps teachers informed of educational programming through weekly and monthly updates from WXXI (Rochester’s public television station) and monthly updates from Cable in the Classroom.

Orientation
Orientation to the media center is provided to freshmen during the first week of school.  Orientation for new faculty members is provided as needed.

Research Assistance
The library offers research assistance and reference services to students, faculty and staff.  Instruction or assistance may be to individuals, small groups or classes.  The library media specialist may also create helpful pathfinders, bibliographies and web sites for particular topics or research projects as needed or as requested by faculty.  The library media specialist encourages collaboration on the development and implementation of projects with all teachers.

Reading and Literacy Promotion
Readers’ advisory services available to all students, faculty and staff.

Notre Dame High School Library participates in the yearly program called Readers-to-Writers sponsored by the Genesee Valley BOCES School Library System.  The program is held each spring and is open to juniors or seniors who are talented writers and are interested in pursuing writing as a career or life-long hobby.

The library also participates in the annual event, A Tale for Three Counties, organized by librarians in the NIOGA and Pioneer public library systems.  Genesee Valley BOCES School Library System also helps facilitate the program.

VISITING THE LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER

STUDENTS FROM CLASSES / SCHEDULING CLASSES

  • When there are a few students from a class who need to use the library, teachers should send them with a pass that has the following information:  students’ names, the assignment, the time, and the teacher’s signature.
If the students stay the whole period, the librarian will return the pass to the teacher’s mailbox at the end of the day.  Otherwise, students will return to class with the pass on which the librarian will note the time they leave the library.
  • If more than 5 students from a class need to use the library, please inform the librarian in advance so that they may be accommodated.
  • Teachers, when you would like to bring your class to the library, please do the following:
1.  Let the librarian know in advance.  We can then meet informally to discuss the assignment, have time to find the best resources, etc.  Also, the library will then be reserved for your class.

2.  Give the librarian a copy of the assignment.

3.  Come to the library with your class.

STUDYHALLS

Students are encouraged to visit the library during studyhalls when they have a library task to complete.
  • Students should report directly to the library media center when they need to use it during studyhalls.  They need to report before the bell for the next period rings and then sign-in.  The librarian will then call studyhall teachers shortly after the period begins to give them the names of students who will spend the period in the library media center.  If there is not room for students from studyhall due to a scheduled class, the students from studyhall are to report directly to studyhall before the bell rings.
  • Students (underclassmen) need to stay in the library the whole period if they use it during a studyhall.
  • Seniors may sign-in and out of the library during studyhalls.

HOMEROOM / AFTER SCHOOL

Students are encouraged to visit the library before and after school.  To visit the library from homeroom, students need to report to homeroom first and get permission to visit the library from their teacher.  If they get permission, they then report to the library and sign-in.  Thye may return to homeroom when they are finished with their work.  Please note that there is limited space for underclassmen during homeroom due to senior assessment groups meeting in the library during this time.

LIBRARY RULES
  • Respect the space as a library, the people in it and the property we all share.
  • Follow policies for student conduct as listed in the handbook.
  • Follow rules for computer use as outlined in the acceptable use policy.

COMPUTER RULES
  • Follow rules outlined in the acceptable use policy.

  • Save documents in your folder on the server or on a jump drive. (Ask if you are unsure about how to do this.)
  • Do your best to conserve paper and ink.  Print only what is necessary.  Store information electronically when possible.  Before you print, try copying text and pasting it to Word, or try printing only selected text.  If something won’t print, please see the librarian.
  • Please ask if you do not know how to do something.
  • Computers are primarily for schoolwork.  If there are computers which are not being used for schoolwork, students may read articles or watch videos from news or magazine sites as approved by the librarian.  If students need computers to complete schoolwork, people on news or magazine sites may need to log-off the computers.  During homeroom, computers are to be used for schoolwork only (due to high demand).  After school, students may play brain games as approved by the librarian.
