MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Notre Dame High School Library Media Center is to support the school’s curriculum by providing teachers and students with resources which will enhance classroom lessons while teaching students how to effectively and responsibly locate, evaluate and use information.  The library media center will also promote reading and provide for the personal information needs of students.  These actions will lead to the students’ personal growth, while they learn to understand and contribute to their community.

HOURS / SCHEDULE

The library will be open from 8:00 - 3:30.  It will be closed 7th period for my lunch break  (unless a scheduled class needs to use the library that period).

The library media center operates on a flexible schedule.  This allows various groups (study hall students, individuals or small groups from classes as well as whole classes) to use the library as needed.

VISITING THE LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER

STUDENTS FROM CLASSES / SCHEDULING CLASSES

  • When there are a few students from a class who need to use the library, teachers should send them with a pass that has the following information:  students’ names, the assignment, the time, and the teacher’s signature.
If the students stay the whole period, the librarian will return the pass to the teacher’s mailbox at the end of the
day.  Otherwise, students will return to class with the pass on which the librarian will note the time they leave
        the library.
  • If more than 5 students from a class need to use the library, please inform the librarian in advance so that they may be accommodated.
  • Teachers, when you would like to bring your class to the library, please do the following:
1.  Let the me know in advance.  We can then meet informally to discuss the assignment, have time to find the best resources, etc.  Also, the library will then be reserved for your class.

2.  Give me a copy of the assignment.

3.  Come to the library with your class.

STUDYHALLS

Students are encouraged to visit the library during studyhalls when they have a library task to complete.  Examples of library tasks are:  doing research, typing a paper, reading a magazine or book, etc.

  • Students should report directly to the library media center when they need to use it during studyhalls.  They need to report before the bell for the next period rings and then sign-in.  The librarian will then call studyhall teachers shortly after the period begins to give them the names of students who will spend the period in the library media center.
  • Students (underclassmen) need to stay in the library the whole period if they use it during a studyhall.
  • Seniors may sign-in and out of the library during studyhalls.

HOMEROOM / AFTER SCHOOL

Students are encouraged to visit the library before and after school.  Students may come and go during these times.

LIBRARY RULES

  • Follow policies for student conduct as listed in the handbook.
  • Follow rules for computer use as outlined in the acceptable use policy.
  • Come to the library to quietly complete a library task. There are many things to do such as research, typing a paper, learning more about a topic you found interesting in a class, reading a magazine or book, etc.

COMPUTER RULES
Follow rules outlined in the Acceptable Use Policy.  Especially the following:

•    You must have your own Username and Password to use a computer.  Use these every time you use a computer.

•    Save documents in your folder on the server or on a jump drive (ask if you are unsure about how to do this).

•    Do your best to conserve paper and ink.  Print only what is necessary.  Before you print, try copying text and pasting it to Word, or try printing only selected text.  If something won’t print, please see the librarian.
